About Hanimaadhoo International Airport
Hanimaadhoo International Airport is the primary aviation gateway to the northern Maldives, located on Hanimaadhoo island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Originally opened as a domestic airport, it was upgraded to international status in February 2012 with the start of direct flights to Thiruvananthapuram in India.
A major redevelopment inaugurated in November 2025 added a 10,380-square-metre passenger terminal and a 2,465-metre runway capable of handling Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft. The terminal separates domestic operations on the ground floor from international services on the upper floor, with four boarding gates and the first aerobridge at a Maldivian atoll airport.
The airport lies about 289 km north of Malé and is designed to handle up to 1.3 million passengers per year, supporting travel to islands and resorts across Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls. Onward journeys can be made by domestic flights, scheduled ferries, speedboats and local transfers.
Passengers benefit from a cargo terminal, a new air traffic control tower, duty-free and commercial areas, and Bank of Maldives ATM and USD currency counters, making the airport a practical entry point for visitors exploring the northern atolls.
