About Raa

Raa Atoll, also known as Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll, is an administrative atoll in the northern Maldives with Ungoofaaru as its capital. It combines relaxed local island life with a growing collection of high-end resorts set among clear lagoons, coral patches and narrow reef channels.

The sea defines the atoll's character. Traditional boatbuilding continues on Alifushi, fishing remains central to daily life, and sheltered dive sites attract divers seeking manta rays, turtles and schools of reef fish. Recent resort developments have added contemporary overwater villas, house reefs and wellness facilities on islands such as Fasmendhoo, Faarufushi and Muravandhoo.

Inhabited islands such as Ungoofaaru and Dhuvaafaru show everyday Maldivian life, with harbours, mosques, small shops and cafés, while resort islands offer private stays, sandbank excursions and sunset cruises. Dhuvaafaru is a planned community rebuilt after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Ifuru Airport connects Raa Atoll to Malé by domestic flight, and many properties arrange onward speedboat or seaplane transfers. This accessibility, together with clear water and varied marine life, makes Raa popular for diving, honeymoons and relaxed family holidays.

Business and events are less concentrated here than in Malé, but resorts across the atoll host weddings, corporate retreats and incentive travel, and the atoll's expanding tourism capacity reflects its rising role in the Maldives.

Raa Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April brings calmer seas, sunny days and the best conditions for diving, snorkelling and sandbank trips. May to October is wetter and more humid, but offers greener islands, fewer crowds and lower seasonal demand.

How to Get Around

Most visitors travel between resort islands, local islands and the airport by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight. Within resort islands, movement is on foot, by bicycle or in electric buggies, while local islands are compact enough to explore by walking.

Where to Stay

Resort islands such as Fasmendhoo, Faarufushi, Muravandhoo and Meedhupparu offer overwater villas, house reefs and all-inclusive stays. Travellers seeking local life can find guesthouses on inhabited islands including Ungoofaaru and Dhuvaafaru.

Food & Drink

Resorts serve international and Maldivian-influenced menus built around fresh tuna, reef fish, coconut and rice, alongside global cuisines. On local islands, small cafés and restaurants offer hedhikaa-style snacks, curries and simple grilled fish, with alcohol generally limited to resort islands.
