About Thaa
Thaa Atoll, historically known as Kolhumadulu Atoll, is a south-central administrative atoll of the Maldives. It consists of 66 islands, 13 of which are inhabited, with Veymandoo serving as the atoll capital. Compared with Malé and the busier resort atolls, Thaa offers a quieter and more local picture of Maldivian island life, with fishing villages, palm-shaded lanes and a broad turquoise lagoon.
Veymandoo is the administrative and service centre of the atoll, home to a hospital, schools, government offices and a small commercial core. Nearby Thimarafushi is the site of Thimarafushi Airport, the atoll's domestic air link, with scheduled flights connecting the region to Velana International Airport in Malé.
The atoll's communities have long depended on fishing, boatbuilding and inter-island trade, and this maritime character remains visible in its harbours, dhonis and daily fish markets. Visitors can observe local life in villages such as Kinbidhoo, Hirilandhoo and Gaadhiffushi, where coral-stone mosques and traditional houses sit alongside newer infrastructure.
Thaa is best known for its marine environment, including coral reefs, clear lagoon water and quiet dive and snorkel sites. The private-island resort COMO Maalifushi anchors the high-end side of the atoll, while a growing number of guesthouses on inhabited islands offer a more community-based stay.
For travellers, Thaa works as a low-key alternative to the Maldives' resort-heavy hubs, reached by domestic flight from Malé to Thimarafushi followed by short boat transfers. Business travel is limited and mostly linked to administration, fisheries and small-scale trade, while leisure visitors come for diving, snorkelling, sandbanks and uncrowded island life.

How to Get Around
Visitors typically arrive on a domestic flight from Malé to Thimarafushi Airport and then travel between islands by speedboat or dhoni. On inhabited islands, walking, bicycles and motorcycles are the most common ways to get around.
Where to Stay
COMO Maalifushi offers a luxury private-island resort experience, while guesthouses on selected inhabited islands provide a more local and affordable base. Liveaboard and safari boat options are also available for dive trips.
Food & Drink
Local food centres on fresh tuna and reef fish, with dishes such as mas huni, garudhiya and Maldivian curries served with rice and coconut. Cafes and small restaurants on inhabited islands offer simple meals, while resort dining and licensed bars are available at COMO Maalifushi.
