About Maldives
The Maldives is a low-lying island nation in the Indian Ocean, made up of around 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls. It is best known for clear lagoons, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and private island resorts, making it a leading destination for beach holidays, diving and romantic travel.
Malé, the compact capital, is the country's political and commercial centre, with the Old Friday Mosque, the National Museum and busy local markets. Other inhabited islands such as Addu City and Fuvahmulah offer a more everyday Maldivian setting, while resort islands are spread across atolls including North Malé, South Malé, Ari, Baa and Lhaviyani.
Most islands are small and flat, surrounded by shallow lagoons and house reefs. Marine life, sandbanks and uninhabited islands are central to the visitor experience, alongside Maldivian traditions such as dhonis, bodu beru drumming, lacquerwork and seafood-centred cuisine.
Tourism is the main economic driver, and the country is known internationally for snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and high-end island stays. Velana International Airport near Malé serves as the main gateway, with domestic flights, seaplanes, speedboats and public ferries connecting islands, resorts and regional airports across the atolls.
