About Yemen
Yemen is a historic country at the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, where ancient trade routes, dramatic mountain scenery and a rich Arab-Islamic heritage come together. Its landscapes range from highland terraces and old walled cities to the Red Sea and Arabian Sea coasts, giving the country a distinctive character unlike much of the region.
The capital Sana'a is known for its UNESCO-listed Old City, filled with centuries-old tower houses decorated in white gypsum, while Aden overlooks a natural harbour and serves as a key southern city. Other notable destinations include the ancient walled city of Shibam with its tall mudbrick towers, the historic town of Zabid and the Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah.
Beyond the cities, Yemen's geography includes the rugged Sarawat highlands, terraced mountain valleys, the hot Tihama coastal plain and stretches of desert bordering the Empty Quarter. The Socotra Archipelago in the Arabian Sea is especially known for its unique plant life, including dragon's blood trees, as well as isolated beaches and mountains.
Yemen has deep historical importance as part of the ancient frankincense trade and the legendary kingdom of Sheba, and it is closely linked to the origins of coffee through the port of Mokha. Traditional architecture, crafts, coffee-growing highlands and regional cuisine all form part of the country's cultural landscape.
Travel within Yemen relies on a limited network of airports in Sana'a, Aden and other cities, together with national roads linking major towns and regions. Because security conditions and access can change, visitors need current local guidance, and journeys between airports, cities, hotels and landmarks are usually best arranged with local knowledge and suitable private transport.
