About Ta'izz
Ta'izz is Yemen's third-largest city and the capital of Ta'izz Governorate, set in the southern highlands along the historic route between Sana'a and Aden. Long regarded as Yemen's cultural capital, it combines old stone and brick quarters, whitewashed mosques and terraced mountain slopes with a strong tradition of trade, scholarship and coffee production.
The city's landmarks reflect centuries of Rasulid and Ottoman influence. The hilltop Cairo Citadel overlooks the centre, while the 13th-century Al-Mudhaffar Mosque, the domed Al-Ashrafiya Mosque and the Taiz Museum preserve some of the region's most important religious and historical heritage. Behind the city, Jabal Sabir rises to nearly 3,000 metres and offers panoramic views and a cooler highland climate.
Central districts such as Al Mudhaffar, Al Qahirah and Salah hold busy markets, historic gates and traditional houses built from local stone and brick. Bab al-Kabeer and Bab Musa are long-established trading points, while surrounding villages produce mangoes, pomegranates, citrus, honey, and the prized coffee once exported through the nearby Red Sea port of Mokha.
As a former capital and commercial centre, Ta'izz has a notable industrial and trading identity, with textiles, tanning, jewellery and food processing among its traditional activities. The city is also known for its distinctive local cheese, lively qat and coffee culture, and a daily rhythm shaped by markets, mosques and family-run businesses.
For travellers and researchers with current security guidance, Ta'izz offers a rare view of highland Yemen's history, architecture and everyday culture. However, the ongoing civil war has caused severe damage to heritage, services and access, so any visit requires careful planning, local contacts and up-to-date security assessment.

Ta'izz Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
October to March offers Ta'izz's most comfortable weather, with cooler highland temperatures and generally clearer skies. Summer is hotter and the July to September period can bring rain, while access conditions should be checked before planning.
How to Get Around
Ta'izz has no formal public transit system, so travel is mostly by shared taxis, private hire cars and minibuses linking central districts with surrounding roads. Movement can be slow because of checkpoints, damaged roads and security restrictions, making pre-arranged private transport the most practical option.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated in the central districts of Al Mudhaffar, Al Qahirah and Salah, close to markets and historic landmarks. Options are limited and vary in condition, so visitors should confirm security, services and current access before booking.
Food & Drink
Ta'izz is known for Yemeni dishes such as saltah, mandi and fahsa, alongside local cheese, fresh bread, honey and coffee from the surrounding highlands. Bab al-Kabeer and Bab Musa markets and small neighbourhood cafés are good places to sample local food.
