About Sana'a
Sana'a is Yemen's capital and largest city, set on a high plateau at about 2,250 metres and surrounded by mountains. It is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and its identity is shaped by the UNESCO-listed Old City, where dense streets are lined with centuries-old tower houses decorated with white gypsum tracery and stained-glass fanlights.
The city has been a crossroads of South Arabian trade and power for more than 2,500 years, passing through Sabaean, Himyarite, Islamic, Ottoman and Zaydi periods. Bab al-Yaman, the fortified Yemen Gate, leads into a labyrinth of souks, mosques and traditional houses, while the Great Mosque ranks among the oldest in the Arabian Peninsula.
Beyond the Old City, Sana'a spreads into districts such as Hadda, a modern western area with hotels and embassies, and Al-Sabeen, built around a large park and government institutions. The National Museum, Al Saleh Mosque and the rock palace of Dar al-Hajar in nearby Wadi Dhahr are among the most recognised landmarks.
Sana'a has long been a political, commercial and administrative centre, although the conflict that began in 2014 has sharply affected daily life, the economy and international travel. Business activity is limited, and most foreign governments currently advise against travel to Yemen.
Even so, the city remains a remarkable destination for those with specialist interest in Arabian architecture, history and culture. Its atmospheric Old City, historic mosques, craft souks and distinctive mountain cuisine make Sana'a unlike any other capital, though visitors must first check the latest security conditions and travel advisories.
