About Maafaru International Airport
Maafaru International Airport is located on Maafaru island in Noonu Atoll, in the northern Maldives. Opened in December 2019 and operating international flights since July 2020, it serves as a gateway to the northern atolls and their luxury resorts. The airport was funded by the United Arab Emirates through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.
Situated about 183 km north of Malé, the airport was built with a 2,200-metre runway that was later extended to 2,800 metres to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 777. Managed by Island Aviation Services, Maafaru has become popular with private jets serving resorts in Noonu, Raa, and Baa Atolls.
The airport features a single passenger terminal with a VIP lounge, along with a control tower, fire and rescue station, and a passenger jetty. Ongoing expansion plans include a larger terminal, additional lounges, and improved passenger services.
Because it is an island airport, onward travel relies on domestic flights to Malé, seaplane services, and speedboat transfers to nearby resort islands, making it a convenient entry point for visitors heading to the northern Maldives.
