About Haa Dhaalu

Kulhudhuffushi is the capital of Haa Dhaalu Atoll and the largest urban centre in the northern Maldives, built on a sizeable island in South Thiladhunmathi Atoll. It functions as the region's administrative, commercial and transport hub rather than a resort destination, giving visitors a closer look at everyday Maldivian island life.

The island takes its name from its most distinctive natural feature, the Mashi Kulhi clay mangrove, one of the few mangrove wetlands of its kind in the Maldives. Kulhudhuffushi has long been associated with seafaring, boat building, fishing and rope making, and it remains proud of local products such as Kulhudhuffushi Haalu sweets and the dried fish product Masbondi.

Around the island, the harbour and seaport area are the busiest spots, with fishing boats, cargo vessels and passenger ferries connecting Kulhudhuffushi to Malé and nearby atolls. The Mashi Kulhi mangrove, surrounded by Brevi trees, offers a calm green escape, while the regional hospital, schools, colleges, banks and government offices give the town a compact, working city feel.

Kulhudhuffushi has grown into the economic engine of the north, with strong retail and wholesale trade, a developing construction sector and regular sea links to the capital. A domestic airport opened in 2018 now connects the city to Malé, and Hanimaadhoo International Airport lies nearby for wider domestic connections.

For leisure travellers, the city is a practical base for exploring Haa Dhaalu's culture, mangroves and nearby islands, and for business travellers it serves the northern region's trade, government and services. Its mix of traditional crafts, local markets and working waterfront makes it a distinctive contrast to the Maldives' better-known resort islands.
