About Avannaata

Avannaata is Greenland's northernmost municipality, covering a vast stretch of the northwest coast around Disko Bay, Uummannaq Bay and the far north near Qaanaaq. Its largest town and administrative centre, Ilulissat, is the main gateway to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The municipality was created on 1 January 2018 from the northern part of the former Qaasuitsup municipality. Four towns and more than twenty settlements preserve a long tradition of Inuit hunting, fishing, dog sledding and kayaking, alongside modern services and growing tourism.

Ilulissat is known for the enormous icebergs that drift from Sermeq Kujalleq into Disko Bay, seen on boat tours, helicopter flights and marked hiking trails. Uummannaq is framed by a heart-shaped mountain, Upernavik holds the world's northernmost open-air museum, and Qaanaaq offers access to the extreme high Arctic near Pituffik Space Base.

There are no roads between settlements, so travel relies on Air Greenland planes and helicopters, passenger boats, ferries and, in winter, snowmobiles and dog sleds. Ilulissat Airport provides the region's main scheduled air links.

For travellers, Avannaata combines Arctic landscapes, midnight sun, northern lights, whale watching, fishing and cultural encounters with practical services in Ilulissat, making it relevant for both adventurous leisure visitors and business travellers.

Where to Stay

Ilulissat has the widest choice of hotels, guesthouses and apartments near the Icefjord and town centre. Uummannaq, Upernavik and Qaanaaq offer smaller hotels, hostels and private lodging, so booking ahead is wise in summer.
