About Pituffik Space Base
Pituffik Space Base is a United States Space Force installation on the northwestern coast of Greenland, roughly 1,200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Formerly known as Thule Air Base, the site was developed in the early 1950s and has long functioned as a strategic Arctic airfield and logistics hub.
The base operates a single passenger terminal and a roughly 3,000-metre asphalt runway that supports military, cargo and charter traffic, along with limited scheduled Air Greenland flights linking the base with Copenhagen. The nearest town is Qaanaaq, about 120 km to the northwest.
There is no road connection between the airfield and Qaanaaq or other settlements, so onward travel within the region is normally arranged by aircraft or boat. Access to the base itself is restricted, and travel arrangements should be confirmed in advance.
Because of its remote Arctic location and military function, the airport offers basic passenger services rather than the full range of commercial facilities found at larger civil airports. Travelers should plan around limited amenities, strict access procedures and weather-dependent schedules.
