About Ilimanaq Heliport
Ilimanaq Heliport is a small helicopter landing site serving Ilimanaq, a settlement in Avannaata municipality on the west coast of Greenland. It lies just south of Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is used mainly for short domestic helicopter services operated by Air Greenland under a government contract.
The site is classed as a helistop because it has no passenger terminal building. Travelers land at a simple helicopter area and continue on foot into the settlement, which is located about 15 km south of Ilulissat. Flights between Ilulissat and Ilimanaq typically take around 15 minutes.
Access changes with the season. Helicopter transfer is the main winter option, while scheduled DiskoLine boat services connect Ilulissat and Ilimanaq during the summer months. In winter, the settlement can also be reached by dogsled, snowmobile or snowshoe routes from the south.
As a gateway to the Ilulissat Icefjord area, Ilimanaq is used by visitors heading to the village, nearby hiking routes and Ilimanaq Lodge. Because the helistop is basic, onward movement is usually on foot or arranged in advance with local operators.
