About Sermersooq

Sermersooq is Greenland's largest municipality by population and home to Nuuk, the country's capital and largest city. Stretching from the southwest coast across the Greenland Ice Sheet to the fjords of the east coast, it is the world's only municipality to span an entire ice cap, and its name means 'place of much ice.'

The region is anchored by Nuuk, a compact Arctic capital where colonial-era buildings at the old harbour stand beside modern institutions such as Katuaq Culture Centre and the Greenland National Museum and Archives, home to the famous Qilakitsoq mummies. On the east coast, Tasiilaq and the isolated settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit keep a more traditional Greenlandic way of life.

Nuuk's districts range from the historic colonial harbour and city centre to newer neighbourhoods such as Qinngorput. Visitors can explore the red wooden Nuuk Cathedral, the Hans Egede House and Nuuk Art Museum, or take boat trips into the Nuuk fjord system for icebergs, whales and fishing.

As Greenland's administrative and economic centre, Nuuk hosts government institutions, fishing and service industries, and a growing calendar of business and cultural events. The new Nuuk International Airport, opened in late 2024, has brought direct transatlantic connections and made the capital a more accessible gateway to the rest of Greenland.

For leisure travellers, Sermersooq offers dramatic fjords, northern lights, dog sledding, hiking and living Inuit culture, while business visitors benefit from Nuuk's hotels, conference venues and government offices. The mix of Arctic nature and city services makes the region a distinctive destination for both work and travel.

Sermersooq Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Summer from June to August brings the mildest weather, long daylight hours and the best conditions for boat trips and hiking. Winter and early spring are ideal for northern lights, dog sledding and snow-covered landscapes, while autumn offers quieter travel and vivid colours.

How to Get Around

There are no roads between Greenland's towns, so travel between Nuuk, Tasiilaq and other settlements relies on Air Greenland flights and helicopters, with coastal ferries along parts of the west coast. Within Nuuk, local buses, taxis and rental cars serve the compact centre.

Where to Stay

Nuuk has the widest choice of hotels, guesthouses and serviced apartments, with convenient bases in the city centre and around the colonial harbour. Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit offer smaller hotels, guesthouses and homestays for travellers exploring East Greenland.

Food & Drink

Greenlandic cuisine features fresh fish, halibut, shrimp, reindeer, musk ox and traditional dishes such as suaasat soup and mattak. Nuuk's restaurants, cafés and the Kalaaliaraq market range from local specialities to international menus, while east-coast towns serve simple local fare.
