About Xinjiang
Ürümqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and one of China's most distinctive northwestern cities. Set at the foot of the snow-capped Tianshan Mountains and often described as the world's most landlocked major city, it has long served as a gateway between China and Central Asia along the old Silk Road.
Its history is visible in landmarks such as Hongshan (Red Hill), a low mountain crowned by a Qing-era pagoda with views over the city, and the Xinjiang Regional Museum, known for Silk Road artefacts and ancient preserved remains. The Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar in the Erdaoqiao area combines Islamic-style architecture, craft shops and a lively Uyghur market culture.
Neighbourhoods vary from the market streets of Tianshan District and the commercial heart around Saybagh and Hongshan to newer districts near the airport. Visitors can explore local mosques, parks, bazaars and museums, or take a day trip to Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) in the Tianshan range about 110 km from the city.
As a trade, logistics and aviation hub for western China, Ürümqi draws business travellers, exhibitors and transit passengers alongside tourists. Its food scene features lamb skewers, pilaf, laghman noodles, nang bread and Xinjiang fruits, while the city's position makes it a practical base for longer journeys across the region.
