About Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport
Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport is the main international airport serving Ürümqi and the wider Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China. First established in 1939, the airport was renamed from Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport in March 2025 and has become a key air hub for China's westward connections. Located about 16 kilometres northwest of central Ürümqi, the airport links the regional capital with major domestic cities and international destinations across Central Asia, Western Asia and Europe. A major expansion completed in 2025 brought the airport to three runways and opened the new Terminal 4, which now handles all passenger flights while the older terminals undergo upgrading. The airport is connected to the city by metro line 1 via a free airport shuttle to International Airport Station, as well as public buses, taxis, private transfers and road links. Long-distance bus connections also make it practical to continue to other cities in Xinjiang. With modern passenger facilities, dining, shopping, lounges and onward travel options, the airport functions as a regional gateway and a bridge between China and Central and Western Asia.
