About Prešov Air Base
Prešov Air Base is a military airfield serving the city of Prešov and the surrounding Prešov Region in eastern Slovakia. It is home to the Slovak Air Force's 51st Wing, a helicopter wing that carries the honorary name of Colonel General Ján Ambruš and operates from the base.
The airfield's history reaches back to 1919, when aircraft landed at the Išľa airfield in the area of today's Nižná Šebastová. In November 1992, the 4th Air Base and 4th Helicopter Regiment were established at the Prešov military airfield, forming the basis of the present helicopter wing, and the base received its honorary name in 2003.
Located about 6 km northeast of central Prešov, the base is connected to the city by local roads. Prešov provides onward road and rail connections to other parts of eastern Slovakia, including Košice and the High Tatras region.
The base mainly supports military helicopter operations, including UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, as well as emergency and rescue support. Because it is a military installation, public access is restricted and there is no regular commercial passenger terminal.
