About Trenčín
Trenčín is a historic city in western Slovakia, set on the Váh River and dominated by Trenčín Castle. Its compact old town, Roman heritage and castle hill make it one of the country's most distinctive regional centres, about 120 km northeast of Bratislava.
The city's landmark is Trenčín Castle, whose origins reach back centuries and which is linked to the medieval magnate Matúš Čák. Below the castle rock, a Roman inscription from 179 AD carved into the cliff records the settlement's ancient importance as Laugaricio.
At the heart of Trenčín is Mierové Square, lined with historic buildings and overlooked by the City Tower, once part of the medieval fortifications. Nearby landmarks include the Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier, the Parish Stairway and the Trenčín Museum.
Trenčín is the administrative centre of the Trenčín Region and home to trade fairs, cultural festivals and the Pohoda Festival, as well as a growing role as European Capital of Culture 2026. Local industry, healthcare and education also make it an important regional business hub.
Visitors can combine castle views, riverside walks and a relaxed old-town atmosphere with easy access to the surrounding White Carpathians and Strážov Mountains. For both leisure and business travellers, Trenčín offers a compact and welcoming base in northwestern Slovakia.
