About Trnava
Trnava is a compact, historic city in western Slovakia known as Little Rome for its many churches and centuries of religious heritage. Its well-preserved old town centres on Trinity Square and a long pedestrian street, overlooked by the Renaissance Town Tower.
The city was granted free royal town privileges in 1238, the first in present-day Slovakia, and later became the seat of an archbishopric and a major church and cultural centre of the Kingdom of Hungary. During the 18th and 19th centuries Trnava played an important role in the Slovak National Revival, and its historic core was declared a Town Monument Reserve in 1987.
Landmarks include St. John the Baptist Cathedral, one of the first early-baroque churches in Slovakia, St. Nicholas Basilica, and the preserved medieval fortifications. The Town Tower, completed in 1574, offers views over the centre. The pedestrian zone along Hlavná ulica links Trinity Square with cafés, shops, and restored burgher houses.
Beyond tourism, Trnava is a centre for automotive manufacturing and higher education. The Stellantis car plant and supplier companies anchor the local economy, while the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius and a Slovak University of Technology faculty bring a steady student and research presence.
Its location about 50 km from Bratislava and around 120 km from Vienna makes Trnava an easy base for business and leisure. Visitors can combine the compact old town with nearby wine country in the Little Carpathians and day trips across western Slovakia.
