Žilina

Žilina is a compact city in northwestern Slovakia, set where the Váh, Kysuca and Rajčanka rivers meet and surrounded by the hills of Malá Fatra. It is one of Slovakia's largest cities and the administrative and economic centre of the Žilina Region, with a historic core that feels relaxed and lived-in.

The city grew from a medieval trading settlement first mentioned in the early 13th century and later became known for its craft guilds and trading privileges. The arcaded burgher houses around Mariánske námestie, the Baroque Church of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity anchor the old town, while Budatín Castle stands at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers, housing the Považie Museum and its exhibition on the traditional tinker trade.

Beyond the central square, visitors can explore riverside paths near Budatín, the Church of St. Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny and Stanica Žilina-Záriečie, a cultural centre in a former railway station that hosts concerts, exhibitions and community events.
