About Gaafu Dhaalu
Thinadhoo is the capital and only city of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll in the southern Maldives, located in the Huvadhu region roughly 407 kilometres south of Malé. Once called Havaru Thinadhoo, it is a compact island community ringed by a lagoon, coral reefs and quiet beaches, with a character shaped by its history as an atoll centre rather than by large-scale tourism.
The island was historically one of the wealthiest settlements in the Maldives and the traditional seat of the Atoll Chief. In the early 1960s it became the economic hub of the short-lived United Suvadive Republic, and in February 1962 the island was depopulated and largely demolished by government forces; Thinadhoo was later rebuilt and, in August 2023, was officially designated a city.
Thinadhoo is known for its own distinctive dialect of Dhivehi, a relaxed local atmosphere and a busy harbour used by fishing and inter-island boats. The surrounding waters offer snorkelling and diving on coral reefs, trips to sandbanks and nearby uninhabited islands, while the island itself has mosques, schools and a growing higher-education presence, including a campus of the Maldives National University.
The economy combines fishing with public services and a developing visitor sector. Thinadhoo has guesthouses and small hotels, and the wider atoll is home to private-island resorts reached by boat. Local cafés and restaurants serve Maldivian staples such as mas huni, garudhiya fish soup, fresh tuna, coconut and roshi flatbread.
For travellers, Thinadhoo is a practical base for exploring the deep south, with Kaadedhdhoo Airport only a short speedboat ride away and regular connections to Malé. It suits leisure visitors seeking reefs, beaches and island culture, as well as business and government travellers visiting the atoll's administrative and service centres.
