About Guangdong

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province and one of southern China's largest and most dynamic cities, located at the head of the Pearl River Delta. Known historically as Canton, it pairs more than two thousand years of trading history with a fast-growing modern skyline, Cantonese culture and a celebrated food scene.

Landmarks such as Canton Tower, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shamian Island, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees and the Sacred Heart Cathedral show the city's layered past. Older temples and arcaded streets sit beside glass towers in Zhujiang New Town, giving Guangzhou a distinctive mix of tradition and contemporary energy.

Yuexiu and Liwan form the historic core, with museums, temples, markets and traditional neighborhoods, while Tianhe is the main business and shopping district and Zhujiang New Town is home to the Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou Opera House and major corporate towers. Haizhu and Panyu add riverside views, green space and access to the Canton Fair complex.

Guangzhou is a major center for trade, manufacturing, technology and international business, best known worldwide for the China Import and Export Fair, or Canton Fair, which brings buyers and exhibitors to the city each year. Its food culture is one of China's most famous, from dim sum and Cantonese roast meats to seafood and late-night street dining.

For both leisure and business travelers, Guangzhou offers historic sights, museums, shopping, dining and a strategic position at the center of the Pearl River Delta, with strong transport links across southern China and the wider region.

Guangdong Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

October to December is the most comfortable period, with mild temperatures and lower rainfall. Spring is also pleasant, while summer is hot, humid and rainy; the Canton Fair in April-May and October-November brings extra demand and higher hotel rates.

How to Get Around

Guangzhou has a large metro system plus buses, trams, taxis and ride-hailing. The metro covers major districts including Tianhe, Yuexiu and Zhujiang New Town, central areas are walkable, and ferries cross the Pearl River.

Where to Stay

Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town suit business travelers with hotels near the CBD and Canton Tower. Yuexiu and Liwan are convenient for historic sights, Shamian Island offers a quieter colonial-era atmosphere, and Panyu works well for the Canton Fair complex.

Food & Drink

Guangzhou is the home of Cantonese cuisine, from dim sum and roast meats to seafood and double-boiled soups. Try morning tea at traditional restaurants, browse Qingping Market, and explore local dai pai dong and modern restaurants across the city.
