Opened in 2011, it replaced the former Shantou Waisha Airport as the shared gateway for Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou, connecting the area to domestic and international destinations.
The airport operates a single passenger terminal building that handles both domestic and international flights. It is located between the three cities, roughly 22 km from central Jieyang, 28 km from Shantou and 24 km from Chaozhou, making it a central access point for the region.
