About Yongphulla Airport
Yongphulla Airport is the main domestic air gateway to Trashigang and the eastern region of Bhutan. It sits on a high ridge at roughly 2,562 metres above sea level and connects the east of the country with Paro and Bumthang through scheduled Drukair services.
The airfield began as a 1960s Royal Bhutan Army airstrip and was later rebuilt for civilian use, opening to scheduled flights in December 2011. After extended closures for runway and safety upgrades, it reopened in October 2017 with an improved 1,266-metre asphalt runway.
The airport has a single small passenger terminal with a shared arrivals and departures hall. Road access links the airport to Trashigang town, about 12 kilometres away, as well as Kanglung and other destinations in eastern Bhutan.
As one of Bhutan's few operational airports, Yongphulla plays an important role in reducing the long overland journey from the west to the east. Travelers should plan for mountain road transfers and limited terminal facilities.
