About Gelephu International Airport
Gelephu International Airport (GLU) serves the town of Gelephu and the Sarpang District in southern Bhutan. Located in Samtenling Gewog, about 2–3 km from Gelephu town, the airport provides a convenient domestic link between southern Bhutan and destinations such as Paro, Bumthang and Yonphula.
The airport first opened in October 2012 and began regular operations on 17 December 2015. In September 2023 it was upgraded to international status, reflecting its growing role in Bhutan's aviation network. Its single runway is approximately 1,500 metres long, and its passenger terminal is compact, with basic check-in, departure and arrivals facilities.
Gelephu sits near Bhutan's southern border with India and is central to the planned Gelephu Mindfulness City development. The airport is well positioned as a gateway to the subtropical southern plains and as a connection point for onward travel across the country.
Ground access is simple: the terminal is a short drive from central Gelephu, and travellers can continue by taxi, hotel transfer or pre-arranged private transport to nearby towns and destinations in the region.
