About Paro International Airport
Paro International Airport is the only international airport in Bhutan and serves as the country's principal air gateway. Located in the Paro valley of western Bhutan, it connects the Kingdom to a small network of international destinations across South and Southeast Asia and also handles domestic services.
The airfield dates back to an airstrip built in the late 1960s, and the current passenger terminal was commissioned in 1999. Set in a deep valley beside the Pa Chhu river and surrounded by high Himalayan peaks, it is widely regarded as one of the world's most challenging airports, with flights generally limited to daylight hours and good visibility.
The airport lies roughly 50 km from Thimphu, the capital, and about 6 km from central Paro. Road connections link it with Paro town, Thimphu and other parts of western Bhutan, and onward travel is available by taxi and private transfer.
Facilities include a VIP lounge, restaurants, a cafeteria, duty-free and gift shops, and banking services, providing essential passenger comfort in a compact single-terminal layout.
