About Zhemgang

Zhemgang is a remote, densely forested dzongkhag in central-southern Bhutan, historically known as Kheng and home to the Khengpa people. Its small administrative town sits above the Mangde Chhu valley and serves as a quiet gateway to subtropical lowlands, wildlife habitats and traditional villages.

Zhemgang Dzong, also called Druk Dechen Yangtse Dzong, stands on a ridge overlooking the river and faces the village of Trong. The site traces back to a 12th-century hermitage of Lama Zhang Dorje Drakpa, and the dzong was rebuilt in 1655 before Zhemgang became a separate district in 1963.

The compact town centre is small, while the wider district is best known for Trong Heritage Village, the sacred Buli Tsho lake, Duenmang Tshachu hot spring and settlements such as Panbang and Tingtibi. Royal Manas National Park protects the southern lowlands and supports species including the golden langur.

Daily life revolves around farming, government administration, weaving and bamboo crafts, with an emerging eco-tourism scene. The annual Zhemgang Tshechu and local festivals draw cultural visitors, while remote trails, birdwatching and riverside camps attract nature-focused travellers.

Zhemgang suits leisure visitors seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience of Bhutan's forests, heritage villages and hot springs. It also holds interest for researchers, conservation projects and development work connected to the dzongkhag administration and protected areas.

Zhemgang Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

October to April is the most reliable season for visiting Zhemgang, with drier roads and better access to villages and Royal Manas National Park. Autumn also brings the Zhemgang Tshechu, while the June to September monsoon can make rural roads muddy and difficult.

How to Get Around

Zhemgang is reached by road from Trongsa in about four hours or via the Sarpang-Gelephu-Trongsa highway, and the compact town centre is easy to explore on foot. For villages, dzongs, hot springs and park entrances, visitors usually travel with a hired car and driver or private transfers because public bus services are limited.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is simple and limited, with small guesthouses and lodges in Zhemgang town and nearby Trong, plus basic homestays in rural villages. Travellers heading to Royal Manas National Park can find eco-lodges and camps around Panbang and Tingtibi, and advance booking is advisable.

Food & Drink

Local Kheng cooking centres on red rice, buckwheat, maize, dairy and the Bhutanese staple ema datshi made with chillies and cheese. Meals are often home-cooked at homestays, while the town has simple restaurants and tea houses serving Bhutanese dishes.
