About Yakubu Tali International Airport
Yakubu Tali International Airport serves Tamale, the capital of Ghana's Northern Region, and functions as the main air gateway to northern Ghana. Originally developed from a wartime landing strip at Nyohene in 1940, the airport has grown into a modern facility that links the north with Accra and supports occasional international and Hajj flights.
Located roughly 15 km north of central Tamale, the airport was upgraded in two phases. The first phase, completed in 2016, extended the runway from 2,438 m to 3,940 m and added a new apron and lighting so the airport could handle wide-body aircraft as an alternate to Kotoka International Airport. The second phase delivered a 5,000-square-metre terminal building designed for up to 400,000 passengers a year, commissioned in August 2023.
The airport operates from a single modern passenger terminal with eight check-in desks, self-service kiosks, a VIP lounge, retail areas and two boarding gates. Africa World Airlines and PassionAir run frequent domestic services to Accra, while the multi-purpose terminal supports Hajj and other special operations.
For onward travel, taxis and shared minibuses connect the airport with Tamale city centre in about 15–30 minutes, and road links provide access to destinations such as Mole National Park and towns across the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.
