About Sunyani Airport
Sunyani Airport is a small domestic airport serving Sunyani, the capital of Ghana's Bono Region. Built in 1942 as a communication outpost and aerodrome for the Allied Forces during World War II, the site was later developed into a full airport and officially opened on 13 July 1974.
Operations were suspended in March 2016 after the runway, taxi link and apron deteriorated. A government-led rehabilitation programme began in October 2019 and was completed in July 2022, with the airport formally recommissioned on 3 August 2022.
The project extended the runway to 1,400 metres and renovated the terminal to process around 100 passengers per hour. The airport is located about 3 km northwest of Sunyani city centre and roughly 110 km from Kumasi.
Today the airport primarily handles domestic flights linking the Bono Region with Accra. Road connections and taxis provide onward travel to Sunyani and surrounding towns, while private transfers and rental cars offer flexible options for continuing journeys.
