About Bono
Bono is a region in western Ghana centred on Sunyani, its capital and largest town. Created in 2019 from the former Brong Ahafo Region, it stretches from the border with Côte d'Ivoire toward the forest-savanna transition and is known for green farmland, cashew and cocoa production, and strong Akan cultural roots.
Sunyani is the region's commercial and administrative hub. Its landmarks include Jubilee and Independence parks, Sacred Heart Church and the busy Nana Bosoma Market, while districts such as Berekum, Dormaa Ahenkro, Wenchi and Tain offer smaller towns and rural scenery.
The region's main visitor draws are nature-based. Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary protects sacred mona and black-and-white colobus monkeys, Duasidan has another monkey sanctuary, and Bui National Park on the Black Volta combines wildlife, river landscapes and the Bui Dam, one of Ghana's largest hydroelectric projects.
Agriculture drives much of the local economy, with cocoa, cashew, timber and food crops supporting trade and small-scale processing. Sunyani also hosts the University of Energy and Natural Resources and serves as a business and meeting centre for the middle belt, while local pubs and restaurants around areas such as Rex keep evenings lively.
For travellers, Bono works as a calm regional base for exploring central-west Ghana. It suits business visitors attending regional meetings as well as leisure travellers interested in wildlife, village life and a less crowded alternative to Accra and Kumasi.

Bono Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months from November to March are generally the most comfortable for travel, with easier road conditions for reaching parks and rural sites. The rainy season, roughly March to October, keeps the landscape green but can make some routes and outdoor activities more difficult.
How to Get Around
Sunyani's town centre is compact and walkable, while taxis and shared trotros cover local movement. For longer trips, buses connect Sunyani with Accra and Kumasi, and a rental car or private driver is useful for reaching Bui National Park and the monkey sanctuaries.
Where to Stay
Sunyani has the widest range of accommodation, from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels near the town centre and business district. Smaller towns such as Berekum and Dormaa Ahenkro offer simpler lodges for travellers exploring the wider region.
Food & Drink
Local meals include fufu with light soup, banku, jollof rice, grilled tilapia and cocoyam dishes, often served with fresh pepper and garden eggs. Nana Bosoma Market is a good place for produce and street food, while Sunyani's pubs and restaurants around the Rex area offer evening dining and drinks.
