About Western

Sekondi-Takoradi is Ghana's twin city and the capital of the Western Region, set on the Gulf of Guinea coast. Known locally as the Oil City, it combines a busy commercial port with a growing oil and gas sector, making it one of West Africa's most important industrial and maritime centres.

The city grew from two separate settlements: Sekondi developed around Fort Orange and early colonial trade, while Takoradi gained prominence after its deep-water harbour opened in 1928 and was linked to Kumasi by rail. Today the two halves function as one continuous urban area with a distinct working-port character.

Visitors can explore Fort Orange and the old High Court building in Sekondi, the bustling Takoradi Market Circle, and the forested Monkey Hill reserve in the heart of the city. Nearby beaches, the Essei Lagoon wetlands and cultural events such as the December Ankos masquerade festival add local colour.

Timber, cocoa processing, fishing, shipbuilding and railway repairs remain part of the local economy alongside newer energy operations, which has brought modern hotels, restaurants and services to the harbour and beachfront districts.

For travellers, Sekondi-Takoradi is the practical gateway to the Western Region's coast and a base for both oil and gas business travel and relaxed beach and cultural trips away from Accra.
