About Volta
Ho is the capital of Ghana's Volta Region and a relaxed gateway to one of the country's most scenic areas. The city sits between Mount Adaklu and the Togo Atakora range, surrounded by green hills that shape its calmer, small-city character.
Ho has deep roots as the centre of the Asogli State of the Ewe people and grew as a trading and administrative town. Local heritage is visible at the Volta Regional Museum, the Sacred Heart Cathedral and the old German buildings and cemetery at Ho Kpodzi, while the Asogli Yam Festival each September remains the city's best-known cultural event.
The city is compact and walkable in parts, with a lively central market that draws traders from across the region and neighbouring Togo. Neighbourhoods such as Ho Bankoe, Ho Kpodzi, Ho Dome and Sokode mix government offices, schools, churches, guesthouses and everyday local life.
Ho is also a regional centre for education, health and administration, home to institutions such as Ho Technical University and the Ho Teaching Hospital. Trade, conferences and public-sector activity give it steady business relevance, while improved road links and the reopened Ho Airport connect it more easily with Accra.
For travellers, Ho works well as a base for exploring the wider Volta Region, including Mount Adaklu, the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary and waterfalls and highland villages around the region. It offers a slower, authentic Ghanaian experience alongside practical services for both leisure and business visitors.

Volta Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from about November to March is the most comfortable period for exploring Ho and the surrounding Volta Region. September is also a rewarding time for culture, when the Asogli Yam Festival brings traditional ceremonies, music and celebrations to the city.
How to Get Around
Within Ho, shared taxis, tro-tros and motorcycle taxis handle most local journeys, and parts of the centre are walkable. For flexible travel to nearby attractions such as Mount Adaklu or villages beyond the city, a private driver or rental car is useful.
Where to Stay
Most convenient options are in central Ho around the market, Hospital Road and the Civic Centre area, with a mix of hotels and guesthouses. Sokode and other quieter residential neighbourhoods offer additional guesthouses for travellers wanting a calmer setting.
Food & Drink
