About Prempeh I International Airport
Prempeh I International Airport is the main airport serving Kumasi, the capital of Ghana's Ashanti Region, and one of the country's key domestic aviation gateways. Formerly known as Kumasi Airport, it has grown into Ghana's second busiest airport after Kotoka International Airport in Accra, connecting the Ashanti Region to Accra and other destinations.
The airport's history dates back to 1943, when it was completed as a military airfield during World War II, and it was later developed for civilian and domestic operations. After successive runway, terminal and infrastructure upgrades, it was declared an international airport and renamed Prempeh I International Airport. A new terminal building opened in July 2024, adding modern passenger facilities and increased capacity.
Located about 6 km from the Kumasi city centre, the airport is reached by road using taxis, private transfers, chauffeur services and rental cars. The single terminal handles check-in, security, arrivals and passenger services, with domestic and international flights operating from the airport.
Facilities include passenger lounges, retail and dining areas, a forex bureau, a medical facility and a faith room, providing practical services for travellers arriving in or departing from Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
