About Swakopmund Municipal Aerodrome

Swakopmund Municipal Aerodrome is a small public airfield serving the coastal town of Swakopmund and the Erongo Region in western Namibia. Owned and operated by the Swakopmund Municipality, it supports general aviation rather than scheduled international airline traffic and is a key base for scenic flights, skydiving, private charters, and occasional emergency services.

Located about 4 km east-northeast of central Swakopmund near the B2 national road, the aerodrome sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, close to the Skeleton Coast and the neighboring port town of Walvis Bay. It has two runways, with the main runway aligned 06/24 and a shorter secondary strip aligned 17/35, and operates during daylight hours without full customs or immigration facilities.

The aerodrome's elevation of about 170 ft (52 m) and coastal position make it convenient for quick transfers into Swakopmund and for access to adventure tourism activities in the surrounding dunes and desert. Because it is not an airport of entry, most international visitors arrive through Walvis Bay and use Swakopmund Municipal Aerodrome for local flying experiences and private aviation.

The municipality has adopted a phased redevelopment plan to modernise the aerodrome, including proposals for a surfaced runway, a new terminal building, taxiways, lighting, and improved fuel and road infrastructure. Until then, the aerodrome remains a compact, practical gateway for small aircraft and travelers exploring Namibia's central coast.
