About Otjozondjupa

Otjiwarongo is the capital of Namibia's Otjozondjupa Region and a well-known stopover on the B1 highway between Windhoek and Etosha National Park. Its name comes from Otjiherero and is often translated as 'beautiful place' or 'place where fat cattle graze', reflecting its role at the centre of a cattle-farming area.

The town grew around the railway that reached the area in the early 1900s, and its German colonial heritage is still visible in older buildings and the preserved Locomotive No 41. Today it serves as an administrative, trade and services hub for surrounding farms and settlements.

Otjiwarongo is best known as a base for wildlife experiences. The Cheetah Conservation Fund, located east of town, and the Otjiwarongo Crocodile Ranch offer close-up encounters, while Waterberg Plateau Park lies to the southeast with walking trails, game viewing and dramatic scenery.

The town centre has a mix of shops, banks, guesthouses, restaurants and a craft market, with easy access to fuel, supplies and services for travellers moving through north-central Namibia. Cattle ranching, agriculture and tourism drive much of the local economy.

For both leisure and business travellers, Otjiwarongo works as a practical overnight stop, a wildlife-focused destination in its own right and a convenient gateway to Etosha, the Waterberg and other parts of northern Namibia.
