About Oshana

Oshakati is the capital of Namibia's Oshana Region and the commercial heart of the country's far north. It lies about 35 km northwest of Ondangwa and forms a fast-growing urban cluster with the neighbouring towns of Ongwediva and Ondangwa. With busy markets, government offices, banks and trade activity, Oshakati serves as the main centre for the surrounding Owambo communities.

The town's name comes from the oshanas, the shallow seasonal water channels and pans that shape the local landscape. This is the Owambo heartland, where Oshiwambo culture remains central to everyday life. Oshakati grew from a small trading and administrative settlement and expanded rapidly during and after Namibia's independence struggle.

The Oshakati Open Market is the town's best-known attraction, a lively place for fresh produce, crafts, clothing and grilled meat. Nearby Ongwediva and Ondangwa add colleges, a university campus, the Nakambale Museum and the region's main airport. Etosha National Park lies a few hours to the south, making Oshakati a practical stopover for exploring northern Namibia.

Oshakati is also a gateway for cross-border trade and business with Angola and a base for travellers heading west towards Ruacana Falls. Business visitors come for government, logistics, agriculture and development work, while leisure travellers use the town to experience Owambo culture and the wider north.
