About Zambezi
Katima Mulilo is the capital of Namibia's Zambezi Region, a green river town on the southern bank of the Zambezi near the borders of Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. As the region's main commercial and administrative centre, it is a practical gateway to the wetlands, floodplains and wildlife areas of north-eastern Namibia and the wider Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area.
The town grew from a small riverside settlement into a regional hub during the 20th century, shaped by its position on trade and transport routes. Its multicultural character reflects the Subia, Mafwe, Yeyi, Totela, Lozi and other communities who live there, making it a meeting point of central and southern African cultures.
Local highlights include the lively Katima Mulilo Open Market, where visitors find fresh produce, crafts and woven baskets, and the Caprivi Arts Centre, known for local woodcarving and textiles. The Zambezi River defines the town and offers boat trips, birdwatching and access to floodplain landscapes, while Bwabwata National Park lies further west.
Katima Mulilo also functions as a service and logistics centre with government offices, banks, shops and fuel stations. It sits on the B8 road linking it with Rundu and the rest of Namibia, and the Katima Mulilo Bridge connects it to Zambia, placing Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango Delta within reach for onward travellers.
For leisure and business visitors alike, the town offers a compact, easy-to-navigate base with riverside lodges, guesthouses and a relaxed pace. Its combination of river scenery, regional culture and cross-border connections makes it a distinctive stop in one of Namibia's least explored regions.
