About Ruhengeri Airport
Ruhengeri Airport is a small regional airfield serving Musanze, the main town of Rwanda's Northern Province. It is best known as the closest air gateway to Volcanoes National Park, where most travellers come for mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga Mountains.
The airport is located close to the centre of Musanze and mainly handles private aircraft, charter flights and helicopter transfers. Akagera Aviation operates helicopter connections from Kigali International Airport to the airfield, giving visitors a fast air link of roughly 25–30 minutes to the gorilla-trekking region.
By road, Musanze lies about 100 km north of Kigali along the paved RN4 route, a drive of roughly two to two and a half hours. Once at the airfield, travellers continue by private vehicle, taxi or lodge transfer to Musanze town, Kinigi, and the lodges around the national park.
As a small airstrip, passenger facilities are limited, and most services are arranged through the operating airline, charter company or safari lodge. The airfield is best understood as a practical regional arrival point rather than a full-service commercial airport.
