Butare Airport is a small civilian airport serving Butare, the urban centre of Huye District in Rwanda's Southern Province. It is one of the airports administered by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority and mainly supports light aircraft, private flights and local aviation operations rather than large-scale scheduled commercial traffic.
The airport sits at an elevation of about 1,768 metres (5,801 feet) and has a single paved runway. Its compact infrastructure is designed for small aircraft, with limited passenger facilities compared with Kigali International Airport.
Located close to central Butare, roughly 1 km from the town centre, the airport is easily reached by local road. Butare lies about 80 km southwest of Kigali International Airport by air, with onward travel by private transfer, taxi or rental car.
