About Western
Gisenyi, also called Kisenyi, is Rwanda's best-known lakeside city and the main urban centre of the country's Western Province. Set on the northern shore of Lake Kivu in Rubavu District, it faces Goma in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo and combines a relaxed beach-town feel with a busy border economy.
The city grew as a colonial-era lake resort and later served as the capital of the former Gisenyi Province before becoming part of the Western Province in 2006. Palm-lined waterfront streets, older lakeside villas and hotels such as the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel still reflect that resort heritage, while the Bralirwa brewery, producing Primus and Mutzig since 1957, is a long-standing local landmark.
Visitors come mainly for Lake Kivu, Gisenyi Beach and the surrounding hills. Popular experiences include swimming from the sandy shore, boat trips toward islands such as Napoleon Island, soaking at the Nyamyumba hot springs, walking or cycling parts of the Congo Nile Trail, and watching the sunset from Rubona Hill.
The town is also a practical base for trade, meetings and regional travel. Its border with Goma supports cross-border commerce, and the improved road to Kigali places the capital about two to three hours away by car, making Gisenyi a convenient stop for business travellers and conferences.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Gisenyi offers a distinctive mix of lake recreation, volcanic scenery, border-town energy and easy access to northwestern Rwanda's national parks and tea and coffee estates.

Western Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
June to September and December to February bring drier, sunnier conditions that suit swimming, boat trips and lakeside walks. The long rains from March to May and the short rains around October to November are wetter, though Gisenyi stays mild and green year-round.
How to Get Around
Gisenyi is compact enough to explore on foot along the lakeside, while moto-taxis and local taxis handle longer hops. Buses connect the town with Kigali and other cities, and many visitors use a private car and driver for hotels, border crossings and nearby attractions.
Where to Stay
Lakeside hotels and resorts near Gisenyi Beach and toward the Serena side offer the easiest access to swimming and restaurants, while guesthouses and budget lodgings in the town centre are closer to markets and the Goma border. Rubavu's surrounding hills also have quieter lodges with lake views.
Food & Drink
Expect grilled tilapia and sambaza from Lake Kivu, brochettes, plantains and fresh tropical fruit, often served with Rwandan coffee or tea. Lakeside restaurants and cafés are popular for sundowners, and the Bralirwa brewery makes local Primus and Mutzig beers easy to find.
