About Southern

Huye, also known as Butare, is the largest city in Rwanda's Southern Province and is often described as the country's cultural and intellectual capital. Set among the rolling hills of southern Rwanda, it is known for its relaxed university atmosphere, historic architecture and strong links to Rwandan tradition.

The city developed from the colonial-era administrative centre of Astrida and grew around education and culture. The National University of Rwanda was founded here, and Huye remains a major centre for higher learning, research, museums and regional administration.

The Ethnographic Museum, one of Africa's most important collections of Rwandan cultural heritage, is the city's best-known landmark. Visitors also come for the large brick Notre-Dame-de-la-Sagesse Cathedral, the lively Huye market, and day trips to the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza and the Murambi Genocide Memorial.

Neighbourhoods around the university, the cathedral and the central market each offer a different pace, from student cafés and bookshops to traditional craft stalls and busy food markets. The surrounding coffee-growing hills make Huye a natural base for exploring southern Rwanda, including the nearby Nyungwe Forest.

Huye serves both leisure and business travellers. Its museums, royal heritage sites and memorial sites attract cultural visitors, while the university, district offices and regional trade generate steady business and conference travel.

Southern Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the most comfortable for exploring Huye, with less rain and better conditions for walking and rural day trips. The rainy periods from March to May and October to November bring lush green hills but can make some rural roads muddy.

How to Get Around

Central Huye is compact and easy to explore on foot, with moto-taxis and bicycle taxis available for short journeys. Buses and shared taxis connect the city centre to nearby towns, while a private car is useful for visiting Nyanza, Murambi and Nyungwe Forest.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated near the city centre, the cathedral and the university, making it easy to reach the Ethnographic Museum on foot. Options range from simple budget lodges to mid-range hotels used by business and university visitors.

Food & Drink

Huye's food scene centres on Rwandan staples such as brochettes, grilled plantains, beans, ibihaza and isombe, served in local restaurants and busy market stalls. Student cafés and coffee shops around the university offer lighter meals and locally grown Rwandan coffee.
