About Northern

Musanze, also known as Ruhengeri, is the principal city of Rwanda's Northern Province and the country's main gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Set at roughly 1,880 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, the city has a cool highland climate and a lively centre of markets, guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators.

The surrounding landscape defines much of Musanze's identity. The Virunga massif rises to the northwest, and the nearby twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer scenic shores and boat trips. Local landmarks such as the Musanze Caves, the Red Rocks cultural centre and the legacy of primatologist Dian Fossey connect visitors to the region's natural and cultural heritage.

Most travellers use Musanze as a base for mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with the park headquarters at Kinigi a short drive away. Day trips can combine forest hikes, crater lakes and visits to rural communities that grow coffee, pyrethrum and Irish potatoes.

Beyond tourism, Musanze is an administrative, education and commercial hub for the Northern Province. The Institute of Applied Sciences at Ruhengeri (INES-Ruhengeri) is based here, and the town supports a growing range of hotels, restaurants and cafés that serve both visitors and business travellers.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Musanze offers a practical starting point for Rwanda's most famous wildlife experiences while remaining well connected to Kigali and the rest of the country by road.

Northern Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons from June to September and December to February generally offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking, hiking and volcano climbs. The wetter months from March to May can make trails muddy but leave the landscape lush and quieter.

How to Get Around

Moto-taxis are widely used for short trips around town, while taxis, private drivers and rental vehicles are better suited to park transfers and day trips. Scheduled buses connect Musanze with Kigali and other towns, and the compact centre is walkable.

Where to Stay

Kinigi, near Volcanoes National Park headquarters, has lodges with easy access to early-morning treks, while Musanze town offers budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Lakeside lodges near Burera and Ruhondo suit travellers seeking a quieter setting.

Food & Drink

Rwandan dishes such as brochettes, ibihaza (pumpkin in peanut sauce), ugali and fresh highland produce are common in local restaurants. Musanze town also has cafés, bakeries and bars serving Rwandan coffee, tea and banana beer.
