About Kamembe International Airport
Kamembe International Airport is the main airport serving Cyangugu, Kamembe and the wider southwestern region of Rwanda. Located near Lake Kivu and close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it provides an important air link for travellers, traders and tourism in western Rwanda.
The airport operates scheduled domestic flights to Kigali with RwandAir, typically using Dash 8-Q400 aircraft, and also receives charter flights from Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The terminal was rebuilt after a 2008 earthquake, with a new terminal completed by the end of 2012 alongside a new control tower and updated navigation systems.
Kamembe Airport lies about 2 km from central Cyangugu, making the short road journey into town relatively easy by taxi, hotel transport, private transfer or local vehicle. The airport has a single asphalt runway of around 1,500 m and supports Q400-series aircraft.
