About Mosteiros Airport
Mosteiros Airport (MTI, ICAO: GVMT) is a former public-use airfield near Vila do Mosteiros on the northeastern coast of Fogo, one of Cape Verde's volcanic islands. The airfield operated from at least 1957, when Aero Clube de Cabo Verde opened an air route with a de Havilland Dove aircraft capable of carrying nine passengers.
The airport served regional flights for several decades but was closed at the end of the 1990s, when air services for Fogo were consolidated at São Filipe Airport on the western side of the island. Its single runway and small passenger building have since been decommissioned.
Mosteiros is located about 24 km northeast of São Filipe, and the area is now reached by road using shared aluguer vans, taxis, private transfers or rental cars. The journey between São Filipe and Mosteiros typically takes around one hour, depending on the route and road conditions.
Although MTI no longer handles flights, the code still appears in some databases. Visitors planning a trip to Mosteiros should book flights to São Filipe Airport (SFL) and arrange onward road transport to the town, coastal areas and the nearby volcanic landscapes of Fogo.
