About São Filipe Airport
São Filipe Airport is a domestic airport serving the island of Fogo in Cape Verde. Also known as Aeródromo do Fogo, it opened in 1997 and replaced a smaller aerodrome on the same site, giving the island a modern arrival point for travellers exploring the Pico do Fogo volcano region.
Located less than 2 km southeast of the centre of São Filipe, the airport handles domestic flights within Cape Verde, including regular connections to the capital, Praia. In 2011, its runway was extended to about 1,500 metres to accommodate larger regional aircraft, improving capacity and safety.
The airport features a single terminal building, with recent expansion work reorganizing the existing structure for check-in and departures and adding a dedicated arrivals building. The modernized terminal includes a business passenger lounge, expanded commercial areas and upgraded sanitary facilities, while new runway and apron lighting allow night flights.
Taxis and private transfers connect the airport quickly with São Filipe, and onward road travel reaches villages such as Vila Nova Sintra and the volcanic landscape of Chã das Caldeiras. Together with rental cars and group transport, the airport offers a practical gateway for visitors arriving on Fogo.
