About Sotavento Islands
Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, set on the southern coast of Santiago, the biggest island in the Sotavento group. The city climbs from a working Atlantic port to hillside neighbourhoods, giving it a compact but varied urban landscape shaped by government, commerce and island life.
The historic Plateau district is the heart of Praia, with colonial-era buildings, the Praia Cathedral, the Presidential Palace and Alexandre Albuquerque Square. Praia became the capital in 1770, taking over from nearby Cidade Velha, the first European settlement in the tropics and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 15 km west of the city.
Neighbourhoods spread beyond the Plateau into Achada Santo António, home to many embassies and the National Assembly, and Palmarejo, where offices, apartment blocks and restaurants line the western side of the city. Coastal spots such as Quebra Canela, Prainha and Gamboa offer urban beaches, while the lively Sucupira market gives a direct view of daily trade and local produce.
Cape Verdean culture runs through Praia's music, food and festivals, from morna and funaná rhythms to cachupa, grilled fish and grogue. The city is also the country's administrative and economic centre, with ministries, banks, the Port of Praia and a growing calendar of conferences and business events.
For travellers, Praia works as both a destination and a gateway. Nelson Mandela International Airport and the port connect the city to other islands, while Santiago offers beaches, mountain trails and the historic town of Cidade Velha within easy reach for day trips.

Sotavento Islands Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to June brings sunny days, lower rainfall and steady trade winds, making it the most comfortable period for sightseeing and beach time. December to April is peak season, and February adds Carnival celebrations to the city's calendar.
How to Get Around
Shared minibuses known as hiace and taxis serve most of Praia, while the Plateau and central areas are easy to explore on foot. For trips to Cidade Velha, Tarrafal or the island's interior, taxis, rental cars and private drivers are practical options.
Where to Stay
Plateau is the most convenient base for landmarks, government buildings and restaurants, while Achada Santo António offers a quieter setting near embassies and beaches. Palmarejo has apartment hotels, eateries and easy access to the western coastal road.
Food & Drink
Local cooking centres on cachupa, a slow-cooked corn and bean stew, along with grilled fish, pastel and grogue, Cape Verde's sugarcane spirit. Try Sucupira market, Plateau cafés and beachfront restaurants for a mix of Cape Verdean and Portuguese-influenced dishes.
