About São Vicente
Mindelo is the second-largest city in Cape Verde and the cultural heart of São Vicente, built around the deep natural harbor of Porto Grande Bay. Its pastel-coloured colonial facades, cobbled streets and year-round music scene give the city a distinctive, laid-back character compared with the busier capital, Praia.
Founded as a small settlement in the 1790s, Mindelo expanded rapidly in the 19th century as a coaling and transatlantic port, attracting British ships and trading companies. That maritime past remains visible in warehouses, consulates and colonial-era buildings that mix Portuguese and British architectural influences.
The city is inseparable from Cesária Évora, the 'Barefoot Diva' whose morna singing brought Cape Verde international recognition. Her legacy lives on around Rua de Lisboa and Praça Nova, where bars, cafés and live-music venues carry the city's nightlife, while Carnival and the Baía das Gatas Music Festival draw visitors throughout the year.
Key landmarks include the Palácio do Povo, the waterfront Torre de Belém replica, the lively Mercado de Peixe fish market and Praça Estrela. The seafront promenade and the climb to Monte Verde offer wide views over the bay, the Monte Cara headland and the island of Santo Antão across the channel.
As São Vicente's main gateway, Mindelo connects by air through Cesária Évora International Airport and by ferry to Santo Antão, one of Cape Verde's top hiking destinations. The city suits culture-focused and independent travellers, while its port, hotels and event spaces also support business visits and smaller conferences.
