About Mosteiros

Mosteiros is a small coastal city and the seat of Mosteiros Municipality in the northeastern part of Fogo, Cape Verde, about 24 km northeast of the island capital São Filipe. Also known locally as Igreja, the town sits where green volcanic slopes meet the Atlantic, with the peak of Pico do Fogo rising inland.

Mosteiros is best known for its coffee plantations, or cafezais, which have been cultivated for around two centuries and produce much of Fogo's coffee. Fertile volcanic soil also supports bananas and fruit trees, while part of the municipality lies within the Fogo Natural Park, giving the area a dramatic volcanic landscape.

The town's main attractions include the black-sand Praia de Nha Sant'Ana, Monte Velha forest, Morro Djeu, Monte Sumbango, Baía de Fajãzinha and the Portela area. Together these sites link coastal scenery with highland trails, coffee-growing slopes and viewpoints of the volcano.

Daily life is rooted in agriculture, fishing and small-scale trade, with tourism growing through coffee tours, hikes and day trips from São Filipe. The municipality celebrates its local day on 15 August, and food highlights include fresh fish, cachupa, goat cheese, grogue and locally grown Fogo coffee.

For travellers, Mosteiros offers a quieter, rural alternative to the busier southwestern side of Fogo. Leisure visitors come for hiking, coffee, beaches and volcanic landscapes, while business travel is mostly tied to agriculture and local services; private transfers and rental vehicles are practical for exploring the island.
