About Gangneung Airport
Gangneung Airport is a coastal airfield in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on South Korea's eastern shore. Best known today as Gangneung Air Base, the site is home to the Republic of Korea Air Force's 18th Fighter Wing and previously handled scheduled civil passenger traffic.
Civil passenger services operated from the single terminal until 2002, when flights were wound down as nearby Yangyang International Airport opened. Since then the airfield has focused on military operations while retaining the IATA code KAG.
The airport lies close to central Gangneung, about 5 km from the city centre, and is reached by local buses, taxis, private transfers and road links. Its location makes it a useful reference point for travel to beaches such as Gyeongpo and Anmok, Jeongdongjin and other east-coast destinations.
