About South Gyeongsang
Changwon is the capital and largest city of South Gyeongsang Province in southeastern South Korea, combining a planned modern centre with the coastal districts of Masan and Jinhae. It is a major manufacturing hub and one of the country's most significant industrial cities, while also serving as a gateway to the region's southern coastline.
The city was developed as a planned administrative and industrial centre from the mid-1970s and expanded in 2010 when Changwon, Masan and Jinhae were merged. This history is visible in its wide streets and organised districts as well as in older port and naval areas such as Jinhae, which is famous across Korea for its spring cherry blossom festival.
Changwon's attractions include Yongji Lake, the Changwon National Science Museum, Junam Wetlands Park and the Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival. Masan's fish market, waterfront and cultural venues add variety, while surrounding mountains and coastal areas provide outdoor recreation.
The city is home to large manufacturing and technology employers, including automotive, machinery, electronics and defence industries, and hosts trade shows and business events. Its proximity to Busan and Gimhae International Airport strengthens its role for both corporate travel and regional tourism.
For travellers, Changwon offers a less crowded alternative to Busan with accessible urban amenities, local food traditions, seasonal events and convenient links across the south coast of Gyeongsangnam-do.
