About Ankara Airport
Ankara Airport is a state protocol and international gateway serving Ankara and the wider Central Anatolia region. Originally opened in 1933, the site operated for decades as Etimesgut Air Base before a major modernization was completed in 2026, when it reopened under the Ankara Airport name.
The airport is located in the Etimesgut district about 15 km west of central Ankara. Its runway was extended to 3,000 metres, and a new 160,000-square-metre apron can accommodate around 44 aircraft. A newly built VIP terminal and state guest house support presidential, diplomatic and official delegation flights, while the facility also handles domestic and international services.
Road access has been improved with a new 12.5 km connection route, and passengers can continue to central Ankara and nearby districts by taxi or private transfer. Because the airport sits closer to the city centre than the capital's main hub, it offers a convenient western approach to Ankara.
With modern runway, apron and protocol facilities, Ankara Airport is designed to relieve pressure on the capital's main aviation gateway and provide a dedicated arrival point for official visitors and international summits.
